Tintype Photographer
Megan Snook
The tintype was the first means by which the workers of the world could afford to have their likeness reproduced. The average person did not posses the means to commission a painting or having a daguerreotype made. Before the mid 19th century, most people only had letters and their memories to hold on to. With the invention of the tintype, mothers could look upon the faces of their children, lovers could hold the visage of their beloved, long after they had gone.
In honor of this I give you “The People’s Portraiture”
immortalize your likeness in silver
I consider the wet plate collodion process a great American folk art. As a preservationist of the old ways, being a tintypist has allowed me to build a life that flows outside of the mainstream. Existing in the slow, intentional current, surrounded by natures bounty.
Thank you for supporting my craft, which supports my little family and our way of life.

Tintypes are made on a sheet of tin using the wet plate collodion process. The process entails coating a tin plate in a viscous fluid called collodion and soaking it in a silver nitrate bath. The silver bath bonds to the collodion, creating a light sensitive film on the plate. The image is then created by exposing the plate to light.
